Papa Noel: The Legacy of the Levee Bonfires

Papa Noel: The Legacy of the Levee Bonfires chronicles filmmaker Mark Niedelson’s journey as he documents the Christmas tradition of St. James Parish, Louisiana. It’s a story steeped in rich history, folklore, food and fire.

What began as a simple project to capture a Christmas Eve ritual that dates back at least two centuries unfolded as the people of St. James Parish welcomed Mark into their homes.

Elders of the community share stories that had been passed down for generations. Mark was able to film their rituals, and to follow along as the community prepared elaborate fires and cooked traditional Louisiana Christmas meals.

Papa Noel: The Legacy of the Levee Bonfires generously gives the viewer an opportunity to witness this extraordinary event, to encounter a community dedicated to working together to uphold a long-standing tradition, and to feel like they, too, are a part of their annual ritual of fire and food.

This film is the only documentary exploring this rich, unique, American folk tradition, and it is airing exclusively on PBS this Christmas season.
